Basic Interior Design Principles You Need To Know

If you can treat yourself to a booklet with graph paper, drawing out the dimensions of the room gives you a better idea of what you have to play with. For example, you need to mark out where the windows are, where you have fixtures which cannot be moved, where you need any electrical work done, since this would need to be done before the decoration stages. Planning your space helps you to save money long term because you are able to see exactly what you have and buy or refurbish items which will make the room look more modern and updated without flooding the place with items that are too large.

 

Mark the measurements of the room onto the plan, so that you know how wide the window openings are, where radiators are placed as these cannot be moved and will constrict what furniture you can place in the room. Mark doorways




Natural light
 

The natural light within a room is vital to how the room looks. You may have had old fashioned drapes which do not pull back entirely to the rebate edge which means that you may actually be losing natural light. In this day and age, it’s a great look to let the light shine into the room. Perhaps you can replace old heavy drapes with linens which allow that light to shine through. Lightweight linen curtains come in all different colors and are reasonably cheap to buy these days, so you may find that you can update the look of the windows and give yourself all the light that you need at the same time. Alternatives could be linen curtains made from lining fabric, which is always going to be cheaper, but which will also let the light get into the room.
