For a recent project involving carpet installation, we used  CL 11 , a commercial-grade, self-leveling compound by  Ardex Endura . Self-leveling compounds are critical for creating smooth, even surfaces, ensuring the subfloor is free from imperfections that could affect the carpet’s performance and appearance. In this post, we’ll explore the step-by-step application method for  CL 11  and the reasons it’s an ideal choice for preparing floors in commercial spaces.

Step-by-Step Application Method

1.  Surface Preparation 

The first and arguably most important step in using a self-leveling compound like  CL 11  is preparing the surface:

-  Cleaning the Subfloor : Remove all dirt, dust, debris, and loose materials from the surface. Even the smallest particles can prevent the compound from bonding effectively with the substrate, leading to potential failure.

-  Repairing Cracks and Holes : Any cracks, holes, or large gaps in the subfloor need to be filled with an appropriate filler or patching compound. While self-leveling compounds can fill minor imperfections, large gaps must be addressed beforehand.

-  Priming the Surface : Priming is critical for ensuring proper adhesion between the subfloor and the self-leveling compound. Ardex recommends using a suitable primer for  CL 11 , applied evenly across the surface. Allow the primer to dry completely (as per manufacturer instructions) before proceeding with the leveling compound. The primer also helps prevent rapid water absorption, which can affect the curing of the compound.

 2.  Mixing the Self-Leveling Compound 

-  Measuring Water and Compound : Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when mixing  CL 11 . The typical ratio for  CL 11  is 6 liters of water per 25 kg bag of compound. However, always check the specific instructions provided with the product, as water-to-compound ratios can vary slightly.

-  Using a Mechanical Mixer : For the best results, use a mechanical mixer to blend the compound and water. Mix thoroughly for about 2-3 minutes until a smooth, lump-free consistency is achieved. Avoid over-mixing or under-mixing, as this can affect the flowability and setting time of the compound.

 3.  Pouring the Compound 

Once the compound is mixed, it’s ready to be poured onto the prepared surface:

-  Start at the Lowest Point : Begin pouring the compound at the lowest point of the floor. The self-leveling compound will naturally flow to fill in low areas, leveling the surface as it spreads.

-  Spreading the Compound : While  CL 11  is designed to flow and level itself, you may still need to assist the spreading process using a gauge rake or smoother. This helps ensure even distribution, especially in larger spaces. Work quickly, as the compound begins to set within 10-20 minutes.

 4.  Smoothing and Leveling 

-  Check for High or Low Spots : After pouring and spreading the compound, check for any high or low spots using a level or straight edge. Adjust as necessary while the compound is still workable.

-  Feathering the Edges : Use a trowel or smoother to feather the edges of the compound, ensuring a seamless transition between the leveled area and any adjacent surfaces.

 5.  Curing Time 

-  Initial Set :  CL 11  sets relatively quickly, often within 4-6 hours, depending on the thickness and environmental conditions. You can typically walk on the surface after this initial set.

-  Full Cure : Allow the compound to cure completely before proceeding with carpet installation. Full curing can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours, depending on the compound thickness, humidity, and temperature. The thicker the layer, the longer the curing time.

 6.  Final Surface Check 

-  Surface Readiness : Before proceeding with carpet installation, ensure the surface is completely dry, flat, and free of dust or debris. Any imperfections or high spots should be lightly sanded down.

-  Use Multiple Hands for Large Areas : For larger spaces, it’s best to have multiple people working simultaneously to ensure even coverage before the compound starts to set.

-  Don’t Overwater the Mix : Adding too much water will compromise the compound’s strength and may cause cracking as it dries. Stick to the recommended water ratio for best results.
