Wallpaper Terminology: Drop Match, Flocked, and Straight Match Explained

When selecting wallpaper, understanding key terms like  drop match ,  flocked , and  straight match  can help you achieve the perfect look for your space. Each term relates to the pattern and texture of the wallpaper and its installation method.

Drop Match

Drop match  refers to the way a pattern needs to be aligned when installing wallpaper. In a drop match, the pattern is staggered rather than aligning in a straight line across adjacent strips. This type of match is typically used for larger or more complex patterns.

-  Characteristics:  In a drop match, the design repeats diagonally. For example, if you align one strip at the top of the wall, the next strip might need to start halfway down to ensure that the pattern continues correctly.

-  Types of Drop Match:

  -  Half Drop Match:  The most common type, where the pattern drops down by half the length of the repeat on each strip. This requires careful measurement and planning to avoid misalignment.

-  Usage:  Best for wallpapers with large, intricate designs, such as damask or floral patterns, where the design flows across multiple strips.

-  Installation:  More complex, as each strip must be carefully positioned to match the drop. This often results in more material waste due to the need to cut extra lengths of wallpaper to align the pattern.

Example:  A large floral or geometric design that doesn’t repeat horizontally but instead cascades diagonally across the wall.

    Flocked Wallpaper

Flocked wallpaper  is a type of wallpaper with a raised, velvet-like texture that adds depth and luxury to a space. This is achieved by adhering small fibers to the wallpaper surface, creating a soft, textured pattern.

-  Characteristics:  The surface has a three-dimensional texture, often with intricate patterns such as damask, baroque designs, or even modern geometric shapes. Flocked wallpaper tends to have a rich, tactile quality that creates a sense of opulence.

-  Material:  The "flocking" is typically made from fibers like velvet, wool, or nylon, which are applied to the wallpaper's surface using an adhesive.

-  Usage:  Ideal for creating a dramatic focal point in formal areas such as dining rooms, living rooms, or entryways. It adds a touch of sophistication and elegance.

-  Installation:  Flocked wallpaper requires careful handling due to its textured surface. Extra care must be taken to ensure that the fibers do not become damaged or dirty during installation. Cleaning and maintenance also require a delicate approach to avoid crushing the texture.

Example:  A rich velvet-textured damask pattern on a dark background, perfect for a feature wall in a formal dining room.

   Straight Match

Straight match  refers to the simplest method of wallpaper installation where the pattern aligns straight across from strip to strip. This means that when you place the next strip of wallpaper, the pattern matches horizontally without any staggering.

-  Characteristics:  In a straight match, the design repeats at the same height across the width of the wallpaper. Each strip aligns perfectly with the previous one, making it easier to match and install.

-  Usage:  Suitable for wallpapers with simpler, continuous patterns, such as stripes, geometrics, or small repetitive designs.

-  Installation:  Straight match is easier to install than a drop match because there’s no need to stagger the strips. However, precise alignment is still necessary to ensure a seamless look.

Example:  A simple geometric design, like interlocking hexagons, where each strip aligns at the same level across the wall.

    Final Thoughts

-  Drop Match:  Best for larger, more complex patterns that require careful alignment.

-  Flocked Wallpaper:  Adds texture and luxury to a space but requires delicate handling during installation.

-  Straight Match:  Easier to install and perfect for patterns that repeat evenly across the wall.

Understanding these terms will help you choose the right wallpaper for your project and ensure that the installation goes smoothly, whether you're aiming for a dramatic statement with flocked wallpaper or opting for a simpler, straightforward design.
