Before starting the granite work, here are the steps to follow:
1. Check the Plans: Make sure the pattern and specifications match the approved drawings.
2. Check for Straightness and Level: Look for uniformity in the surface visually. Use tools like a spirit level or a straight edge to ensure the surface is flat and straight.
3. Verify Tiled Surface: Ensure the fresh tiles are level using tools like a spirit level or a string line. The surface needs to be properly leveled.
4. Check Materials: Confirm that the cement and sand have been tested before using them for tiling.
5. Inspect Granite Pieces: Ensure the granite pieces are not broken or cracked. If there are cracks near the edges, fill them with epoxy compound.
6. Even Out Joints: After filling the joints, use an angle grinder to make them even.
7. Check for Hollow Spots: Tap the tiled surface to check for hollowness. To prevent damage, cover the surface with POP and tarpaulin sheets.
8. Properly Fix Doorjambs: When fixing granite doorjambs, use cement paste to create a strong bond with the surface. Make sure the surface is at a 90-degree angle to the floor.
9. Clean Up Excess Cement: When installing windowsills, make sure the mason cleans up any extra cement slurry or drips right away to maintain a neat finish.
10. Proper Chamfering: Check that the skirting edges are chamfered according to the specifications. Chamfering means creating a beveled edge, and it should be done accurately.
11. Uniform Steps: Ensure that the treads (horizontal parts) and risers (vertical parts) of stairs are consistent in dimension and thickness. This uniformity is important for safety and aesthetics.
Some of the other criteria on which we need to attentions
1. Ordering Granite:
Granite pieces should be ordered in sizes that fit the site dimensions, so they don’t need cutting on-site.
2. Checking Granite:
Check the received granite for defects. Reject pieces that have different colors or textures, holes, seams, stains, or other issues. The dimensions should be within specific limits.
3. Site Preparation:
Clean the site thoroughly, removing any loose concrete, mortar, or debris.
4. Chasing Work:
Any work involving concealed piping or electrical conduits should be done after the rough coat plastering.
5. Marking Levels:
Create level pads and mark levels as per the architectural specifications.
6. Cement Mortar Mix:
Use a specific cement mortar mix (1 part cement to 4 parts sand) for fixing granite skirting, flooring, dado, treads, and risers.
7. Preparing Flooring Granite:
Granite pieces are dry matched in the yard, cut to the required size, numbered, and then laid on-site in the exact order they were cut. This ensures they fit perfectly and look uniform on the floor.
During the execution of the work, follow these steps:
Start with Right Angles: Begin work by ensuring right angles for existing walls, as specified in the drawings.
Prepare Surface: Wet the surface where granite is to be laid. Apply a layer of mortar on the floor and position granite using cement slurry.
Ensure Leveling: Level the granite using an aluminum straight edge and a rubber hammer. Address any slopes during this stage.
Decide Slopes Early: Determine and address any slopes in the foundation.
Match Joint Filler: Use joint filling material that matches the color of the granite.
Neatly Fill Joints: Use a putty blade to clean and fill joints meticulously since they will be visible as paper joints.
Use Stainless Steel Anchors: When fixing granite to the wall, use appropriate stainless steel mechanical anchors for secure attachment.
