What Interior Designers Need to Know about Materials?

What Designers Need to Know Materials now about  •Be aware of the broad range of materials and finish products that are available. •Select and apply appropriate materials and finish products on the basis of their properties or physical characteristics, which will determine how the product will perform. •Know how the use of the materials will affect the acoustics of the space. Absorbent materials will help deaden the sound, making spaces less noisy. Reflective materials will add to the noise level of a space, which may be desirable in some instances. EPOXY FLOOR

EPOXY FLOOR A step guide on how to apply epoxy floor paint. The below guide is a summary of the steps required to coat a floor with epoxy floor paints. This guide applies to a simple roller applied two-coat floor. Such floors are suitable for light and medium wear and tear, perfect for garages and storage rooms. Step 1. Prepare the surface. Preparation of the substrate is necessary in order to ensure adhesion between the epoxy product and the substrate. Suitable methods are sanding or diamond-grinding. Any surfaces that have been contaminated with oils may also require chemical cleaning. Prepare the surface with a suitable floor grinder. Step 2. Sweeping and cleaning of the floor. Use an industrial vacuum that picks up even small dust particles. The floor must be cleaned of all dusts and residues before starting to prime. Otherwise you will have various particles trapped within the coat and adhesion will be significantly weakened. The less micro-dust on the surface...

Issues In Exposed Brick Work

Rustic, idyllic, elegant or harsh – exposed brick can have multiple faces, depending on what color you have it and how you decorate around it. When done properly, brick walls can be a tremendous statement of style, but they have certain shortcomings that you should be aware of before you get down to hammering off the plaster. Brick Wall Facts One of the greatest problems with exposed brick in external walls is temperature and moisture control.  Brick walls are never waterproof . Bricks and mortar are able to absorb a great deal of moisture in multiple ways and must be able to breathe to eliminate this moisture. Water can enter through tiny cracks between the bricks and mortar. When mortar doesn’t completely fill the vertical joints between bricks, these “head joints” will allow water to flow. Bricks and mortar have tiny passageways that like a sponge, suck water in … and release it quickly. Older homes may experience leaks but this rarely causes problems. With...

Basic Interior Design Principles You Need To Know

Image
Drawing out the dimensions   If you can treat yourself to a booklet with graph paper, drawing out the dimensions of the room gives you a better idea of what you have to play with. For example, you need to mark out where the windows are, where you have fixtures which cannot be moved, where you need any electrical work done, since this would need to be done before the decoration stages. Planning your space helps you to save money long term because you are able to see exactly what you have and buy or refurbish items which will make the room look more modern and updated without flooding the place with items that are too large.   Mark the measurements of the room onto the plan, so that you know how wide the window openings are, where radiators are placed as these cannot be moved and will constrict what furniture you can place in the room. Mark doorways Natural light   The natural light within a room is vital to how the room looks. You may hav...

Wallpaper Terminology: Drop Match, Flocked, and Straight Match Explained

When selecting wallpaper, understanding key terms like  drop match ,  flocked , and  straight match  can help you achieve the perfect look for your space. Each term relates to the pattern and texture of the wallpaper and its installation method. Drop Match   Drop match  refers to the way a pattern needs to be aligned when installing wallpaper. In a drop match, the pattern is staggered rather than aligning in a straight line across adjacent strips. This type of match is typically used for larger or more complex patterns. -  Characteristics:  In a drop match, the design repeats diagonally. For example, if you align one strip at the top of the wall, the next strip might need to start halfway down to ensure that the pattern continues correctly. -  Types of Drop Match:    -  Half Drop Match:  The most common type, where the pattern drops down by half the length of the repeat on each strip. This requires careful meas...
