Why Concrete Post Is Required Around Metal Door Frame

Why Concrete Post Is Required Around Metal Door Frame

1. Structural Strength & Load Transfer

Metal doors (fire doors / heavy-duty doors) impose:

High self-weight

Repeated dynamic loads due to opening/closing

Closer impact loads

A concrete/RCC post:

Transfers loads directly to slab

Prevents frame distortion

Avoids long-term sagging of shutter

📌 Especially important when walls are AAC / gypsum / lightweight blocks.

2. Proper Fixing of Door Frame

Concrete backing allows:

Mechanical anchors / holdfasts to grip properly

Avoids pull-out failure

Maintains door squareness

📌 Chemical anchors perform poorly in AAC blocks without backing.

3. Fire & Safety Compliance (Critical for Fire Doors

For fire-rated doors:

Solid backing is mandatory for fire rating integrity

Prevents early failure during fire exposure

📌 Most fire door manufacturers clearly state this requirement.

4. Alignment & Long-Term Performance

Concrete post ensures:

Frame remains plumb & level

Door closer works effectively

No vibration or rattling

Where Concrete Post Is Mandatory

✔ Fire-rated metal doors

✔ Main entry / service doors

✔ Electrical / UPS / DG / server room doors

✔ High-traffic areas

✔ Doors in single-skin or lightweight partitions

Recommended Construction Detail (Standard Practice)

RCC Post Detail (Preferred)

Size: 150 mm × wall thickness

Reinforcement:

4 nos T10 vertical bars

8 mm stirrups @ 150 mm c/c

Post to be cast from slab to slab

OR

Concrete Infill Post (Alternate)

MS box frame fixed first

Filled with M20 concrete

Shear keys / dowels into slab

📌 Final choice depends on design, load, and site constraints.

Fixing Details for Metal Door Frame

Holdfasts or anchor bolts embedded in RCC post

Minimum 3 fixings per side

Fixing spacing: 450–600 mm c/c

Gap between frame & wall to be grouted with non-shrink grout

Note: “Door frame to be fixed only after RCC post curing completion”

📌 Without this detail, door warranty and performance may be affected.

Site Instruction Line (You Can Use This)

> “Provide RCC concrete post on both sides of metal door frame from slab to slab for improved structural stability and fixing. Door frame installation to be carried out only after post casting and curing.”
